Why capstones bounce more than any other course
Three structural reasons. First, chained tasks: capstones run Task 1 into Task 2 into Task 3, and a weak Task 1 foundation, a vague topic, an unmeasurable goal, poisons everything downstream, forcing rewrites of work already evaluated. Second, self-defined scope: for the first time the prompt does not hand you a scenario, and students pick topics that are too big, too data-starved, or too dependent on an employer's cooperation. Third, the calendar: capstones sit last, which means they run during your most exhausted month against your least forgiving deadline. None of these are intelligence problems; all of them are project-management problems, which is why a managed capstone feels so disproportionately easier.

Pick a topic that evaluates well
Before anything drafts, we shape your topic against the rubric: small enough to finish, measurable enough to defend, sourced from data you can actually reach. Most capstone misery is decided right here, in the first week.
Draft Task 1 as the load-bearing wall

Chain the remaining tasks

Capstones reward one scheduling decision above all others: do not let the capstone be the only course left in the term. Start it with a month of margin, or start the term with it running in the second lane. The resubmission calculus, and why a capstone inverts it
A performance assessment returned Not Competent can be revised and resubmitted with no grade penalty. There is no letter grade to protect and no average to drag down. On a single-task course that makes students relaxed about submitting early, and they are right to be. On a capstone it should do the opposite, because of the chain.
Two things get judged on a chained capstone: the task in front of the evaluator, and, silently, everything it inherited. When the first task fixes a scope, a goal or a set of figures, later tasks are read against that commitment. A Task 1 that squeaks through after two rounds of patching costs no marks and leaves you building on a foundation you already know is thin.
The decision, with both directions on the table. Submit as soon as it is defensible: an evaluator's read is the only authoritative signal available, it arrives inside the service level the university commits to, and it turns your guess about scope into a fact before you draft a fortnight on top of it. Against that, you have spent a cycle, and if the return says the project is wrong rather than the writing, you redefine the work with the next task half built, the most expensive thing that happens on capstones. Hold until genuinely finished: a first-pass Competent collapses a multi-cycle timeline into one and keeps the chain clean. Against that, if the project is unworkable you learn it later than you had to, with more sunk work behind you.
The resolution is a split rather than a compromise. Put the free feedback on the project definition, using whatever pre-submission checkpoint the course provides: a topic approval step, an instructor review, an outline. Then send the graded task finished. The evaluation queue is a judgement, not a drafting service, and using it as one is how three weeks disappear. The revision guide covers the return itself.
Chain arithmetic: what one bounce really costs
Put placeholder numbers on a three-task capstone and the sequencing argument stops being temperament. Say you draft the first task in 10 working days, the second in 8, the third in 7, and each submission sits in evaluation for up to the 72 hour service level WGU commits to. Run it in series, waiting for each result before opening the next:
10 + 3 + 8 + 3 + 7 + 3 = 34 days, and that is the clean run where nothing comes back.
Now bounce the first task once. Add the rewrite, call it 3 days, plus another cycle of 3, and the chain slides to 40 days, every downstream date moving with it. Bounce the second as well and you are at 46.
Overlap instead. The moment the first task is submitted, the second starts drafting against exactly what it committed to, and the waits stop being separate calendar items because they now sit underneath work already in progress: 10 + 8 + 7 = 25 drafting days, plus the final wait of 3 = 28 days. A bounce now costs the rewrite and whatever rework it forces in a draft you already hold, not a fresh block of dead time: call it 34 days, what the serial plan managed with nothing going wrong.
Set that against a term boundary. With 45 days left, the serial plan survives one bounce with 5 days spare and dies on the second. The overlapped plan survives two and keeps margin. Same student, same writing, different order of operations.
The warning that belongs with it: overlapping pays only if downstream drafts are written against what the earlier task actually says, not what you hope it says after revision. If the foundation moves, so does everything above it. The evaluator timing guide has the queue in detail.
Where the project comes from: three sourcing routes

The question is not which route is strongest but which one you will still be on in six weeks. An employer project is the best material and the only one somebody who does not know your term dates can cancel, so take it with a written fallback: the public comparable you would switch to, identified before you need it.

Where a guarantee would be the natural claim, ask instead, in writing, before money moves. If the second task returns because the first one changed, is that revision inside what I paid for or a new order? Who holds my file if the writer disappears in week five? The returns we see most on capstone documents
- Rewriting the whole task after a partial return. Evaluations mark aspects individually, so rewriting sections that already read Competent is how a resubmission fails on something the first one passed. Change what was flagged; leave the rest.
- Submitting the whole chain at once at the end. Three tasks entering the queue together means three sets of feedback arriving together, every one too late to have informed the others.
- Values pasted over formulas. A model flattened into hard numbers cannot be followed, and an aspect asking for the analysis is not satisfied by the result of it.
- Required elements buried in appendices. Appendices support a claim; they do not stand in for one. If the aspect asks for it, it belongs in the body.
- A method that quietly contradicts the earlier task. You proposed a survey and ran interviews. That is allowed, and it needs one sentence saying so, or the later task fails the earlier one's commitment.
- A reference list assembled for weight. Sources listed but never used, or used but never listed, are checkable in ninety seconds.
